Renegades roll

Renegades added a second piece of silverware to their trophy cupboard this weekend with a victory over Teachers in their Presidents Cup match on Saturday afternoon at Malabar.

The hard fought 10-7 win also launched Renegades’ defense of their league title on a positive note as they were the only side to collect a full brace of points from the weekend’s games.

Renegades seized the advantage when new fly half John Hurt slotted over a subsequent penalty after sustained pressure had forced Teachers back into their 22. It would be the only points yielded in the first half.

Teachers regrouped at the half and were awarded for constant pressure with a penalty try after the break when Renegades conceded a penalty near their own try line. Reds’ scrum half David Porter took the ball himself and was prevented from scoring by a desperate tackle from a Renegade’s player which was instantly deemed illegal by the referee. Naylor slotted the conversion to put Teachers 7-3 up in the match.

Renegades responded almost immediately with a fine solo effort by their scrum half Tom Healy when he pounced on a ball knocked forward by a Teachers player in the tackle and ran untouched the length of the field to score.

Hurt added the conversion to make it a 10-7.

Police and Mariners drew 7-7 in the earlier game where Mariners enjoyed most of the possession thanks to their dominant forwards but were unable to collect any points.[[In-content Ad]]
