FRIDAY, JULY 1: A roundup of Bermuda’s athletes competing at the Island Games:
Athletics
Gary Raynor blazed his way into the men’s 1,500m final when he clocked 4:10.94 and placed second in his heat. Raynor’s time was the second fastest of the qualifiers and should have a good chance to win a medal in Friday’s final.
In the women’s 200m, Melissa Clarke ran a 26 flat in her heat and placed seventh in the final with a time of 26.07. Victoria Clarke did not make the starting line.
Badminton
Rowena Cespedes and Rohan Pai lost their mixed doubles round of 32 match 11-21, 9-21 while Rick Dorush and Dianne Blais lost a tough three setter 12-21, 15-21, 9-21.
Cycling
In the men’s time trial, Tre-Shun Correia clocked 1:07:56, Dominique Mayho 1:09:36 and Darren Glasford 1:10:11. The winning time was 58:21 by Andre Roche from the Isle of Man.
Golf
Damian Palayandi is in the medal hunt. He shot a 69, which kept him in sight of the leaders. Palayandi has a three round total of 213, two strokes off the bronze medal position going into tomorrow’s final round.
Camiko Smith (226) is 20th, Alex Osbourne 36th (238) and Ryan Benevides 43rd (246).
The men are in fifth position at 676 strokes, but are 32 off the pace for a medal.
The women are also in fifth, but with a score of 770, 42 strokes off medal pace.
Ebonie Burgess is in eighth after shooting an 86 today, which probably takes her out of medal contention.
Katrin Burnie (265) is 22nd, Laura Robinson (267) is 24th and Elizabeth Parsons (278) is 33rd.
Shooting
Brian Mello and James McPhee were 23rd and 24th in Olympic skeet shooting.
Wilbour Lightbourne and Anthony Rabain were ninth in NSRA 100 yards prone rifle team event with a score of 1,070, which was 85 off medal pace. Lightbourne had a score of 531 for the individual event, which was good enough for 17th while Anthony Rabain recorded a 507 for 19th.
Squash
Chris Stout and Micah Franklin lost the bronze medal men’s doubles match to Gibraltar 1 to 2. Earlier in the day they lost to eventual silver medalists Cayman Islands 0 to 2. They won their first round match against the Isle of Wight 2 to 0.
The women’s doubles team lost their first round match 0 to 2 to Shetland Islands, but won their second round match 2-0 versus Gibraltar before finishing in sixth with a 1 to 2 loss to the Isle of Man.
Volleyball
Bermuda’s young men’s team finished in eighth place out of 10 after losing to Greenland 14-25, 13-25 and 23-25.
The women’s team won a gutsy fifth place match. The squad lost the opening game to Rhodes 22-25 before winning the next one 25-20. Rhodes took game three 25-20, but the women played with a lot of heart and determination to win the next two games 25-16 and a nailbiting fifth game 21-19.
