Rangers should win two-day league
With prize money up for grabs, the competition should be intensified as the teams battle for top place in their respective conferences this weekend.
Premier Division
Western Stars v Bailey's Bay
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At St John's Field
Stars will still be without their national team players Saleem Mukuddem, Treadwell Gibbons and Hasan Durham after struggling so badly in their absence last weekend. Of the others Justin Robinson has led from the front with the ball while Dennico Hollis chipped in with some valuable wickets but without those three they look short on experience. Bay, who have Irving Romaine and Ryan Steede away on the tour of England, will also be looking to improve on their recent displays.
They need a convincing win here if they are to unseat Rangers at the top of the Premier Division and take the $2,500 top prize for this ultra-short league competition. Stars just need a victory to keep them off the bottom.
Southampton Rangers
v St George’s
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Southampton Oval
If Rangers weren’t going to lose last weekend with six first-team players missing, it seems unlikely that they’ll do so this time.
The national team players are still out but Keith Wainwright and Dion Stovell should be back to bolster the batting.
Olin Jones has been the top bowler in the league so far, with son Malachi not far behind.
And with Traddie Simpson also in fine form with the ball and any one of their stable of top order batsmen capable of a match-winning innings there’s no competing with Rangers at the moment.
St George’s have got some great players in the making but they are a young side and Rangers should expect to clean up the division in front of their home crowd.
First Division
Social Club v Willow Cuts
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Devonshire Rec
Charlie Marshall continues to provide compelling evidence for those who believe he should be recalled to the national team in the problem openers slot.
They’ll need another good innings from him this weekend if they're to avoid taking the wooden spoon in this conference.
With Kenny Phillips also looking good with the ball they should have a decent chance of foisting that unenviable honour on Willow Cuts at the weekend.
St David’s v Leg Trappers
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At St David's
The battle for first place in Division One goes down to the wire with this winner takes all fixture at St David's. The islanders should be strong favourites in spite of their one-day woes last weekend. They’ve got the Pitchers and Delyone Borden in cracking form and are looking good all-round. Luke O’Connor is the man of the moment though. The Leg Trappers captain has taken 11 wickets at just over ten-a-piece in this form of the game so far. He's also spanked 226 runs at an average of 56.5, so St David's had better stop him if they want to win the group.
Second Division
Police v Devonshire Rec
On Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Police Field
In young all-rounder Dean Stevens, Devonshire Rec have one of the country’s top performing youngsters. Along with St George's Oronde Bascome, Southampton's Malachi Jones and Warwick’s ,Steven Bremar, Stevens is making the national team selectors sit up and look. He’s averaging almost 100 with the bat and has taken 12 wickets at just six-a-piece with the ball. Derrick and Ricardo Brangman and Jodi Maronie have also been key players for Rec who can wrap up the division with victory over mis-firing Police this weekend.
Warwick v PHC
On Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At White Hill Field
Warwick haven't really got their season into gear yet, but with Bremar creaming a marvellous century for the under-19s at the weekend there is some call for optimism. Kevin Tucker’s in decent form with the ball for PHC while Cal Waldron’s having a good run with the bat. Either team could claim the division with victory here, should Rec slip up against Police.
Third Division
Somerset v Somerset Bridge
On Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Somerset CC
Jacobi Robinson has been the form player for Somerset this season, though the west enders have had mixed success despite some good performances. They shouldn't have too much trouble against their closest neighbours this weekend though.
Cleveland v Flatts
On Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Wellington CC
In Dennis Musson jnr, Cleveland have the top wicket-taker in all divisions at the moment.
A haul of 17 wickets in two matches at this form of the game is unmatched anywhere. With that kind of potency in the bowling Cleveland shouldn’t have much trouble wrapping up the divison here.[[In-content Ad]]
