Rangers should take a win from Stars
Social Club remain contenders for the league one day title after they were left off the hook by the Under-19s last Sunday. Kevin Hurdle showed his versatility as he hit an unbeaten 42, including four sixes as he and fellow tailender Jaymo Durham saved Social Club. Veteran Charlie Marshall showed his leadership with a 33 while Damon Robaine (24) also contributed. Pace bowler Jeff Tyrrell was three for 31.
Somerset had a bye last week. Social club's outing showed they can be beaten, it's just a matter of not overlooking anyone in YMSC's lineup, because they all can contribute.
Western Stars v Southampton Rangers at St. John's
Maurice Lowe blasted a 78 as he helped Stars beat the Under-19s last Saturday. Lowe and fellow opener Treadwell Gibbons (20) gave Stars a good start before the wickets started falling. Wayne Campbell (29) was the only other St. John's Road batsman to reach double figures. Stars will have to be tidier at the bowling end as they gave up 48 extras - an unacceptable figure by any standard. Playing against Flatts, Stars only managed 70 runs and were easily sent home with a defeat. Only Gibbons and Campbell reached double figures as Stars batting attack looks like it has a few holes.
Rangers showed in winning the Belco Cup two weeks ago that all those epitaphs about them being dead were premature. Southampton still has class and depth to challenge anyone. They suffered a bit of a shock defeat last week against St. George's, but that match was reduced by 12 overs.
Rangers should prevail here, especially if Stars plan on giving lots of 'extra' gifts.
St. David's v Under-19s
at the National Centre
Everyone's rooting for the Under-19s to do well as they play against the men. Stephen Bremar had 36 while Terryn Fray had 26, in what could be a glimpse of the future for the national team openers.
St. David's had little difficulty in getting past Clay Smith's Cleveland as they won by eight wickets. National team player O.J. Pitcher had 57 with the bat while St. David's skipper Lionel Cann had three for 16.
The Under-19s will face a stiffer test here than they did last weekend.
Cleveland v St. George's
at Wellington Oval
Oronde Bascome showed why he is wanted man by the Under-19 team as he helped spark St. George's to an 11-run triumph over Rangers. Bascome had 71 in that game and that kind of quality could be used at the international level. Rudell Pitcher did the damage with the ball in taking four for 30.[[In-content Ad]]
