FRIDAY, DEC. 28: When the slave trade began, traders witnessed the amount of care Africans gave to their hair.

Realizing the prominence hair played in the lives of western Africans, the first thing slave traders did was shave their heads; this was an unspeakable crime for Africans, because it robbed them of their identity.

Thirsty Curlz, a Facebook group that started as a cry for help for one well-known blogger has evolved into a global sisterhood of black women embracing their natural kinks and downplaying what society believes is attractive and acceptable.

The growing 475 membership includes women from Africa, UK, US, Caribbean and Canada exchanging their personal hair journeys and the woes and triumphs of maintaining chemical free hair.

A woman’s hair is a confession.

Today many black women are saying goodbye to creamy crack and rejecting the view of those images of what beauty is by the dominant culture.

A lot of women are no longer using sodium hydroxide to chemically straighten their hair and their daughter’s hair.  Wearing my hair natural has been a very rewarding, emotional and spiritual experience.

Members’ questions

In the Thirsty Curlz Facebook group members are asking questions, exchanging hair styling tips, ‘How To’ video tutorials, YouTube channels such as Chary Jay and Coily Head Chic, popular hair blogs like a Black Girls with Long Hair, Urban Bush Babes and Essence’s.

Each one teaches one.  I had relaxed hair for majority of my life than I transitioned to locs (extensions).

After having waist length locs for eleven years I decided to do the ‘Big Chop’ in September 2011 resulting in an afro nightmare simply because I lacked the knowledge regarding products available like Jojoba Oil, protective styling techniques to prevent frizz and understanding my 4b coily hair type and corkscrew curl pattern.

Knowledge is power...Power is being in control...Being in Control is when you know you’re beginning, your roots....

A strong root can withstand any weather... A strong root has the power to grow.

As a blogger I like to keep the topics informative, interesting and interactive giving people to right to choose.

Due to popular demand I have now launched a Thirsty Curlz Facebook page in addition to the TC group.

The Facebook page is where I mainly blog on hair topics and is opened to readers who enjoy my  natural hair blog whether they are natural or not.  The TC group is mainly ‘Naturalistas’ that privately share and chat amongst themselves.

On Thirsty Curlz’s website there is a CurlTalk segment interviewing curlfriends (TC members) this month’s feature is Ms Joanne Ball-Burgess a Bermudian residing in Nairobi, Kenya sharing her best hair advice and styling regime.

There is also a page on the history of black hair, the 60’s afro movement and the Black Panther symbol which has proven to be very popular amongst our readers.  We can’t leave out the masculine eye-candy called Quality Treats a section that highlights black men.

For the month of December Thirsty Curlz is inviting the public to visit their website Thirstycurlz.com and vote online for the sexiest Mr Quality Treat of 2012 and Like their (new) Facebook page for a chance to win a People’s Pharmacy gift certificate.
