The final round of the Bermuda rugby league took place on Friday evening at National Sports Center, and despite nothing but pride being at stake, the large crowd in attendance witnessed some cracking matches.

Ladies

First off were the ladies matches between Mariners and Teachers, and Renegades against Police, played simultaneously. Teachers put in a superb performance but just fell short of a talented Mariners side. Amanda Swan and Chantal Brown were the try scorers for Mariners, with Marie-Pierre Beaudoin scoring for Teachers Dragons.

The other game saw champions Renegades put in a clinical display to dispatch a gallant Police team. Laura Haynes was the star of the show as she grabbed five tries for Renegades, with Ruth Boo Leston, Karen Peckett and Maria Dobinson each scoring one as they ran out 8-3 winners.

Saphia Tonkin with two and one from Julia Mansfield were the scorers for the Police ladies.

Men

Teachers 20, Mariners 15

The first men's match was league victors Teachers facing Mariners. With both sides missing some key players, Teachers were able to give some experience to their undoubtedly talented young players that they've cultivated over the last few years, and they didn't disappoint.

Mariners were very slow out of the blocks and found themselves behind early on. Great work from the Teachers drew the defence in before they passed it out wide where David McHugh touched down.

The conversion was missed but Teachers looked strong. More great work ended in the hands of Lubin Sousa, and he went over to extend the lead. Shauntino Simons converted to make it 12-0.

Finally, Mariners woke up and began to gain good ground but Teachers tackling was solid.

They were caught offside though and Mark Pomeroy slotted the penalty to leave Mariners trailing 12-3 at half time.

Teachers again started the stronger and Mariners were penalized for hands in the ruck, Greg Fraser making no mistake with the kick.

Again Mariners came back strongly and great work from their pack saw them camped on Teachers' try line.

Scott Brown showed great patience to wait for the opportunity, and then immense power to barge over the line for Mariners first try. Pomeroy missed the conversion but made up for it a few minutes later with a superb conversion to tie the match after Gary Brady had gone over, again after great work from the pack.

As both sides pressed to snatch the win, a good attack from deep from Teachers went out to Scott Cobon on the wing to secure a last gasp 20-15 win for Teachers.

Police 32, Renegades 25

The final match of the night was Police against Renegades and it turned out to be an absolutely fantastic game. Renegades started brightly and found themselves in an early lead through Eoghan O'Dwyer's penalty.

Darragh O'Donoghue added a second penalty to increase the lead. Renegades were very impressive at this point, and Greg "Boycie" Garside scored the opening try, converted by O'Donoghue, to push them 13-0 in front heading to half time.

As time expired in the half, Renegades had possession but instead of kicking dead, kept the ball in play.

The confusion in their defence allowed David Pringle to return it through them and get Police off the mark with a fine try, as Renegades led 13-5 at half time.

Police closed the gap further shortly after the start of the second half, when Darren Richardson powered over the line, with Pringle converting.

Renegades responded well, and after O'Donoghue looked to have wasted a good overlap, his reverse pop sent the burly Conor McGlynn through to score under the posts.

Neil MacGuinness converted. Again Police came back, and Lambert Schreuder ploughed over to grab a try.

The end to end battle continued, as Ian Henderson showed brilliant awareness to burst down the blindside and restore the Renegades lead 25-17. From there out though, Police dominated and pulled it back again with Pringle grabbing his second try after an excellent break from deep.

There then followed a bit of controversy as Durnferd Davis scored in the corner, with Renegades adamant he had been in touch first.

O'Dwyer's extremely over-zealous protestations left the referee with no choice but to send him off. Police sealed the win at the end when Driaan Viljoen grabbed another try to seal a 32-25 win, in arguably the game of the season.
