Perfect atmosphere to concentrate on cricket

We kick-off our Caribbean tour this week at the Trinidad national cricket centre in Couva.

It's the ideal place to begin preparations for the World Cup qualifier because it is in the middle of nowhere.

We're going to be fully immersed in cricket. There is nothing else to do out there except practice and play cricket.

It's just what we need to get things rolling.

We'll be working with their fitness trainer getting in some serious physical work over the weekend as well as doing some net sessions and some fielding work.

We're staying in dormitory style accommodation. It's a lot like Warwick Camp, which is the kind of atmosphere you need to get focused and ready for battle. As far as I'm concerned this is not just a practice tour. Whenever you pull on the Bermuda jersey it is serious.

We're all fighting for 15 spots and it is up to us to pick ourselves with our performances.

I want to continue my development on this tour and make sure I'm in the squad for South Africa.

The opposition we are up against is going to be as good, if not better, than what we will face in the qualifiers. Trinidad's Under-23 squad includes some of the best young players in the West Indies.

We've come up against the young opener Wayne Perkins a few times and as far as I can see he is unlucky not to be playing one-day-internationals or even Test cricket.

We've got to look at this as competition time. We have to come focused and try to win every game so we are peaking at the right time.

The tournament in South Africa is going to be one of the biggest challenges we have faced and we want to come into that with some momentum.

There will be an element of experimentation in the team selections, I'm sure, because coach will want to give everyone a chance to stake a claim for a place.

But the focus should still be on winning these games. There's no such thing as a friendly when you play for your country and the best way for us to make sure we are in the squad is to score runs and take wickets.

If we do that I'm sure we'll come away with some victories.
