WEDNESDAY, MAY 4: Devonshire Parish Council is launching a scholarship for students who live in the area.

Three awards of different values will be offered to undergraduate students.

It is the first time the council has offered the scholarships.

Council member Oneika Millet said: “In these economic times, people need some assistance, so we thought we could put it in our budget for this year. We want to do a little more for the parish than we were currently doing.

“The funding wasn’t there but now our finances are in order and we realized there is a need.

“It’s not just for overseas students but you have to be a full-time students.

Interview

“We will interview the candidates after applications have been shortlisted.”

Fellow council member Kimberley Caines added: “We are targeting residents of Devonshire. We are taking into consideration good academics, financial need and community service.

“We consider it a privilege to be able to assist someone with their studies.

“Both of us have been recipients of scholarships and bursaries so we definitely see it as a stepping stone to reaching goals.”

Mrs Millet hopes there will be a “good bit” of candidates.

Applications are available from Devonshire Post Office and must be postmarked by May 31. For more information, e-mail [email protected].[[In-content Ad]]
