If the response to The National Dance Foundation of Bermuda’s master classes is anything to go by, Bermuda’s dance students are more than eager to learn.

More than 130 students registered for a series of classes by the American Ballet Theatre held Thursday through Saturday. Members of the ABT are on the island to perform at An Evening with Catherine Zeta-Jones, a black-tie gala being held on Saturday, February 25 at the Fairmont Southampton Resort. The gala raises funds for DanceBermuda, the NDFB’s international summer dance institute presented in partnership with ABT.

The master classes, which are free, are held at the Bermuda High School’s Jessie Vesey Sports Centre.

“We are so appreciative of the master class programme that ABT runs in the three days leading up to the gala,” said NDFB Chairman Don Kramer. “On Thursday and Friday afternoon, Kenneth Easter, a member of ABT’s corps de ballet who is performing a solo at the gala, is teaching a jazz class.

“On the same afternoons, Nancy Raffa, who is the Artistic Director of ABT’s Summer Intensive Programme and an acclaimed master teacher, will be teaching Intermediate Ballet. Richard Toda, who will be on the teaching faculty of DanceBermuda 2006, will lead a class in Beginner’s Ballet and on Saturday morning, will teach classes in musical theatre and jazz. Also on Saturday, an additional ballet class has been added to accommodate demand from registered dancers.

“All of these classes are full and as a result, more than 130 students from the island’s dance schools will be receiving first-class training from some of the world’s best dance teachers – free of charge,” added Mr. Kramer. Kramer said that corporate support of the black-tie gala, which, according to organizers, has been overwhelming, means that in addition to the free master class series, senior dancers from each of the island’s dance schools are able to attend the gala on a complimentary basis. Mr. Kramer noted that the students’ presence is an important part of the evening’s recognition of Bermuda’s talented young people.[[In-content Ad]]
