Oldest SCC Cup Match player dies
Anthony 'Sonny' Roberts, the former Somerset Cup Match skipper, died earlier this week at age 91.
Prior to his death Roberts had been Somerset's oldest surviving Cup Match player having debuted in the classic in 1942.
That distinction now belongs to former wicketkeeper Wendell 'Woodgate' Simmons who, ironically, replaced his late team-mate as Somerset's Cup Match captain in 1953.
During his career Roberts also played for Somerset Bridge Recreation Club and Police Recreation Club before going on to become a well respected umpire.
In 1952 Roberts captained Somerset against a touring West Indies team comprised of Test players, including the legendary Sir Gary Sobers.
He also served on Somerset's Cup Match selection committee for over a decade and along with late Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) president Alma 'Champ' Hunt, Sinclair 'Bunkers' Bean and Carl Simmons formed the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association (BCUA) in 1961.
The late cricketer is the father of former Youth and Sports Director Brenton and Somerset Trojans footballer Melvin.[[In-content Ad]]
