For the record, last Sunday was not a good day for me.
I played golf in the morning and suffered a net loss of $21.
We play a number of small net bets on a Sunday morning and the crooks I play with take great pleasure in extracting money from your wallet.
Make no mistake, I'm the same but last Sunday I was on the paying out side of the equation.
I pulled myself together and went over to Tucker's Point where The Bermuda Mixed National Championships was being held.
This event is played over 36 holes and I was due to help out on Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, I was told that my role was to assist in any rules query and to monitor speed of play. I could feel the blood drain from my face since these are two very tough assignments.
For example, when is play slow?
If all groups are taking five hours and no one is being held up, is that slow play?
In addition, while I am familiar with the 34 or so Rules of Golf, in order to do justice as a Rules Official, one needs to have a strong working knowledge of the Decisions on the Rules of Golf.
The Decisions run on forever and make for some very interesting reading, however, being a Rules Official can put seriously deep wrinkles on your face. I was very relieved when Bob Legere, the real BGA Rules Official, arrived on the scene.
Two batches of licks in any one day are plenty for me.
Besides, I had to get home to get ready to see Tyler Perry's new movie that evening which, based on previous Madea movies, would at least ensure my day ended on a happy note.
I tuned into the Tour Championship as I got ready for Madea. It was starting to get exciting and I was kicking myself for not being able to see it to the end. My bad Sunday was continuing. Tyler Perry's new movie had better be good, I thought, as the Tour Championship certainly was.
Annoyingly, the TV commentators kept providing what-if situations for the FedEx Cup, which only served to emphasize for me the farce that the FedEx Cup is.
Countless permutations were put forward as to who might win the FedEx Cup, and its $10 million first prize, all of which were basically a waste of time since they were all premised on Tiger choking somehow.
Pigs flying would be more likely.
On a good note, I didn't see the ending of the FedEx Cup, which actually ended months ago when Tiger returned from injury.
After all, if they struggle to beat Tiger in any given week, what chance do they have over a full season.
As for Tyler Perry's Madea movie, perhaps not as good as previous Madea's but certainly a whole heck of a lot better than the current FedEx Cup.[[In-content Ad]]
