MONDAY, OCT. 8: If you are looking for a truly unique Oktoberfest dining experience, head to The Newport, a Gastropub at the Fairmont Southampton.

I have raved about their food since they opened in July because it is just awesome.

I went to the restaurant on Friday night with my son and boyfriend.

The menu was what I imaged to be chic Bavarian food.

I wasn’t sure how much I would like it, but I was certainly willing to give it a try.

The first course was The Newport "Brotzeit" plate, a tasting plate featuring ‘Obazda,’ a traditional Bavarian cheese spread, Bavarian soft pretzel, shaved cured ham, pickles, house made German Bratwurst, Sauerkraut and sweet mustard.

The pretzel was soft, salty and fantastic and the cheese spread was melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

I hadn’t tried bratwurst before and was delighted with how tasty they were.

The cured ham was perfect.

Now, I’m not a Sauerkraut fan but I did try it and didn’t enjoy it but I’m sure you Sauerkraut lovers would enjoy.

The boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed the course.

For the main course, we had Rinder Roularden, a braised roulade of beef with red cabbage, bread dumplings and mashed potatoes, paired with Chimay Triple Ale of Belgium.

The beef was the tenderest beef I have ever eaten.

I didn’t even need to use a knife to cut it.

It was stuffed with pickles, something I didn’t realise until I had almost finished

I hate pickles but they were very good in this.

The mashed potatoes were creamy, the braised cabbage was delicious and the bread dumplings were crisp and tasty.

We both thought this course was better than the first, even though the starter was wonderful.

I’m not a beer girl so I didn’t enjoy the beer pairing but I did try it out.

I was very excited about dessert being that I’m also a baker.

We had Kaiserschmarrn, a baked pancake with toasted almonds, plum compote, applesauce and vanilla ice cream along with Bermuda’s own Dockyard Whale of Wheat Ale.

I can’t say that I enjoyed this at all.

Both of us felt it wasn’t at all sweet, something I think is needed in a dessert.

And I’m not talking about sickingly sweet, just not savoury.

The beer was good but again, I’m not a beer drinker.

My son took full advantage of the kids’ menu having the catch of the day, grilled wahoo, with French fries and vegetables.

He loved the French fries and ate about half of the wahoo.

All he was worried about was his sparkling water with Rose’s lime, ice cream and playing in the arcade after dinner.

All in all, it was a wonderful dinner and a great way to spend a Friday night.

Please visit The Newport soon, whether it is for the Oktoberfest menu until the end of the week or just to try out their imaginative regular menu.

The Oktoberfest menu is $47 per person or $56 per person with beer pairings.
