The Limbo Up Foundation is planning to open a new DVD library stocking some of the best natural history documentaries, classics, art house and foreign movies.
The lending library, also affiliated with the Bermuda International Film Festival, is due to open its doors on the first floor of the Somers Building at 15 Front Street, Hamilton on October 13.
The DVD library will contain a wide-ranging collection of about 2,000 movies from around the world that are not necessarily available in the local video rental stores. They include the Criterion Collection of classic and contemporary films such as Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider and Jack Nicholson’s Drive, He Said, the 100 best as rated by AFI such as Elia Kazan’s On The Waterfront and John Schlesinger’s Midnight Cowboy.
Limbo Up, owned by Mike Murphy, is seeking volunteers to work in the library. The time commitment would be three to four hours per week or every other week to cover lending hours. Alternatively, volunteers are being asked to sign up as a substitute to be called upon when the regulars are unavailable. Any potential candidates would need computer skills and preferably a familiarity with an Apple Machintosh.
Visitors to the library need to take photo ID and proof of address such as a recent utility bill. Limbo Up will provide a link to its website listing all the movies in the library. The site will include reviews and other details to enable customers to view the collection online. To minimize costs Limbo Up will not issue membership cards but will ask to see your ID at each visit.
Mr. Murphy said: “We hope the Limbo Up Foundation library will broaden the scope of cinema entertainment in Bermuda and we are excited to share it with you.”
To find the library, follow the signs through the BIFF offices on the first floor towards the back of the building.
