Mullan takes second place at World Senior Golf Championship
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31: Bermuda did very well at the World Senior Golf Championships in San Diego.
Representing Bermuda at the Twin Oaks Golf Club and Maderas Golf Club were Terry Mullan (captain), Howard Desilva, Max Abend, newcomers Rick Bartlett and Geza Wolf.
Bermuda has sent teams to this event for the last 35 years and DeSilva is the longest serving Bermuda participant having competed for the last 20 years.
This year saw 11 countries with 80 players represented, down from last year which had 15 countries and over 100 players.
Phase 1 of the competition saw the Bermuda team finish third gross.
Mullan was low gross in the 60 – 64 age group and third overall with a two-day score of 153.
Howard was low gross in the 75 and over at 159 having shot below his age on the first day.
In the second phase of the competition, Mullan finished runner up in the Maytag Championship Flight match play.
He took his opponent to the 18th hole on the final day before he lost the overall title.
Mullan also beat the defending Champion and medalist on Friday, again on the 18th hole.
Abend won his flight, the Tutt Flight easily 4 and 3, not the first time he has been successful in this championship.
DeSilva won his beaten fours consolation.
Bartlett won the Evans Flight consolation handily having lost the first hole but winning the next 8.
Geza Wolf struggled with the course and unfortunately failed to place.
A golf competition is also put on for the wives of the competitors with a two-day medal play and a putting competition. Dottie DeSilva, Howard’s wife came second in the putting competition.
The overall winner was Dan Lowrance of Amarillo Texas who was last years runner up at Rancho Bernardo Golf Resort in San Diego.
Next years competition will be held at Twin Warriors golf resort in Santa Fe New Mexico.
