Comedy/fantasy/family

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson continues his transition from hulking wrestler to family film favourite with this kiddie-friendly comedy.

He stars as minor league hockey player Derek, who has earned the nickname the Tooth Fairy because his aggressive style of play usually results in opponents losing teeth.

This combined with him cynically telling his girlfriend's daughter the tooth fairy doesn't exist sees him hauled before furious real fairies and ordered to serve two weeks as a tooth fairy.

At first he hates the role - especially his wings, wand and tights - but eventually he warms to it and is a reformed character by the end of his adventure.

Tooth Fairy is predictable, fish-out-of-water comedy but will amuse youngsters.

The sight of muscled Johnson crammed into a fluffy tutu and blue tights is initially funny but the gag soon wears thin.

Stephen Merchant steals every scene as Tracy, Derek's fairy mentor, and the interplay between the pair lifts the movie. Julie Andrews is perfectly cast as the strict but kind-hearted head fairy Lily, while a cameo from Billy Crystal is one of the best scenes. He plays an eccentric potions maker who is to fairies what Q is to James Bond.

Johnson seems to be following in Arnold Schwarzenegger's footsteps by taking roles in against-type family films like this and The Game Plan, but hopefully he will tackle a meatier action role soon.
