Thriller/mystery
This dark, edge-of-your-seat chiller will keep you guessing right to the end.
Set in the 1950s, it follows U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is sent to an island institution for the criminally insane to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), a dangerous filicide.
She appears to have vanished into thin air while in her locked cell, leaving behind a note reading: "Who is 67"
It's clear psychiatrists Dr. Cowley (Sir Ben Kingsley) and Dr. Naehring (Max Von Sydow) know more than they are letting on, while Teddy has an agenda of his own.
He believes the man who killed his wife Dolores (Michelle Williams), arsonist Andrew Laeddis (Elias Koteas) is hidden in an off-limits ward.
But when a hurricane cuts off their access to the mainland and more criminals escape, Teddy uncovers sinister secrets about the island and its inhabitants that threaten his sanity and his life.
Helmed by legendary director Martin Scorsese, the cast includes two of the best actors in Hollywood, Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley and Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley, plus the ever improving Leonardo DiCaprio.
Scorsese masterfully handles the twisting narrative, so as soon as you think you know where the plot is heading it takes you in another direction.
He also creates a wonderfully gothic, foreboding set - the hospital is a dark, gloomy place where the truth is shrouded by a fog of mystery.
