Comedy/romance
This may seem like another rom-com by numbers but it’s better than the average, cliché-ridden chick flick.
There are a few stereotypes but the story is also told from a man’s point of view and there is plenty of humour for guys and girls.
It focuses on the trials and tribulations of a long-distance relationship as endured by Garrett (Justin Long, He’s Just Not That Into You) and Erin (Drew Barrymore). They agree to a no-strings fling because she is only in town for a few weeks before returning to San Francisco.
Yet when it comes time to say goodbye they realize they are made for each other and decide to have a long-distance relationship, keeping their romance going via text, phone sex and the occasional cross-country rendezvous.
On-again/off-again real-life lovers Long and Barrymore have wonderful chemistry and charm but the real stars of the show are Long’s screen buddies Dan (Charlie Day) and Box (Jason Sudeikis).
The duo’s deadpan, no nonsense observations and improv are the source of most of the comedy.
Like Sleepless In Seattle with a hint of American Pie, there is enough love, lust and laughs to keep both of you happy on date night.
