Romance/drama
Army sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) is home on two weeks leave from Germany when he meets college student Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) and quickly falls in love.
When she returns to school, she promises to write to him during the year he is away completing his enlistment and they regularly exchange heartfelt letters.
John eventually returns - but decides to reenlist following 9/11, putting the couple's love to the test.
Based on the best-selling novel by Nicholas Sparks, who penned The Notebook and Message In A Bottle, this low budget chick flick toppled Avatar from the top of the U.S. box office after seven weeks.
Good looking leads Tatum (GI Joe, Public Enemies) and Seyfried (Mamma Mia) have good chemistry and their romance is believable and well executed.
Skilled director Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules) ups the romanticism further with soft focus framing.
The movie won't appeal to guys but girls will love it - especially since Tatum spends most of it shirtless.
