Mid Ocean - the course that vexed the world's best pro golfers

The Mid-Ocean is one of the trickiest courses in Bermuda. Here's a hole-by-hole look at how the four major winners handled its undulating fairways and superfast greens on day one of the PGA Grand Slam.

Hole 1 - The Atlantic

Par 4, 471 yards

Steady start for the elite foursome all hitting the green in regulation. Harrington, clad in a lime green polo-shirt, threatens a birdie with a 10-footer that circles the lip of the hole, but it won't drop. Four pars to start with.

Harrington E Furyk E Goosen E Immelman E

Hole 2 - Long

Par 4, 418 yards

Open champion Padraig Harrington opens up a one-shot lead, hitting the flag pole with his second shot and finishing off with a cool putt from eight feet as a brief shower whips across the Mid-Ocean course.

The others are struggling to judge the pace of the greens and settle for pars. Furyk pays for a shanked second shot with the first bogey of the day.

Hole 3 - Eden

Par 3, 167 yards

The super-slick greens are still getting the better of the four major winners. All put themselves in a position to birdie, but all miss their putts on this picturesque ocean-side par-three.

Harrington -1 Goosen E Immelman E Furyk +1

Hole 4 - Mangrove

Par 4, 330 yards

Immelman three-putts, missing an easy four-footer to go one over. Furyk pulls himself back to evens with a birdie, courtesy of a superb chip to within three feet of the pin.

Harrington finds the sand with his tee shot, but redeems himself with a great bunker shot to save par.

Hole 5 - The Cape

The Mid Ocean's signature hole is known as a 'classic risk-reward' challenge because of the treacherous stretch of ocean that cuts into the fairway.

All four play it safe and lay-up short. But it is the greens that are their undoing once again as Furyk three-putts to go back to one over. Goosen saves par with a magnificent bunker shot to within a couple of feet.

Harrington -1, Goosen E, Furyk +1, Immelman +1

Hole 6 - Brow

Par 4, 360 yards

A short par four, but there's no Angel Cabrera this year to try and drive the green.

Goosen hits the longest drive but misses out on a birdie by a millimeter. He waits for a second to see if the wind will blow it in before settling for par.

Harrington needs a great putt to save par after shanking his second shot into the crowd. Immelman makes birdie.

Harrington -1, Goosen E, Immelman E, Furyk +1,

Hole 7 - Short

Par 3, 164 yards.

If you're short you're in the water, if you're long you're in the sand. That's the conundrum on this short par-three, fronted by two pools dissected by a thin bridge of fairway.

It's not a problem for Jim Furyk who puts his tee-shot within an inch for a birdie. Immelman hits the bunker and loses a shot.

Harrington -1, Goosen E, Furyk E, Immelman +1

Hole 8 - Valley

Par 4, 349 yards

Harrington finds the hibiscus bushes with a horrible hook of a tee-shot. He takes it back to the tee for another go and ends up wiping out his lead with a double bogey.

Goosen replaces him at the head of the field with a birdie.

Goosen -1, Furyk E, Harrington +1, Immelman +1

Hole 9 - Sound

Par 4, 406 yards

All four comfortably negotiate the water with near-identical tee-shots. Goosen misses a six-footer to come back to the pack with a bogey.

Everyone else makes par and there's just one shot in it going into the turn.

Goosen E, Furyk E, Harrington +1, Immelman +1

Hole 10 - Mercer Hill

Par 4, 404 yards

They're finally getting to grips with the greens as Immelman and Goosen hole 12-footers for birdie.

The same can't be said for Furyk though who misses from much closer to stay one off the pace.

Goosen -1, Furyk E, Immelman E, Harrington +1,

Hole 11 - Trots

Par 5, 487 yards

Traditionally this short par five would be a chance to pick up a couple of shots. Not so for Trevor Immelman who takes the scenic route clubbing his second shot into the bushes and then hacking around in the rough to record a double bogey.

Furyk shows how it's done, chipping to within ten feet and rolling home for an eagle.

Hole 12 - Hillside

Par 4, 482 yards

Immelman is in a bit of trouble now. He shanks his second shot into the rough, then finds the sand with his third and ends up with another bogey.

Furyk also finds the bunker but scrambles a par.

Furyk -2, Goosen -1, Harrington +1, Immelman +3

Hole 13 - Biarritz

Par 3, 238 yards

It's as you were as all four golfers play it steady on the longest par 3 in Bermuda.

Furyk -2, Goosen -1, Harrington +1, Immelman +3

Hole 14 - Leven

Par 4, 357 yards

Harrington shoots the green with a monster drive that would have made Cabrera proud. He two-puts for a birdie. Furyk feels the pain on the super-fast greens once again as his drive flies across the slick surface and into the rough. He bogeys,

Goosen -1, Furyk -1, Harrington E, Immelman +3

Hole 15 - Punchbowl

Par 4, 504 yards

Masters champ Immelman is falling to bits. He misses a tricky, long putt for par and adds another to his score.

The rest survive this long par 4 with their scorecards intact,

Goosen -1, Furyk -1, Harrington E, Immelman +4

Hole 16 - Lookout

Par 4, 367 yards

With the wind whipping across the course, playing these greens is getting tougher and tougher.

Harrington seems to be handling the challenge best and holes a difficult putt for birdie.

It's a case of paradise lost for Immelman whose nightmare back nine continues as he misses another putt to struggle to a double bogey.

He's now six over par, seven shots off the lead and with more bogeys on his card than a sick child's handkerchief.

Harrington -1, Goosen -1, Furyk -1, Immelman +6

Hole 17 - Redan

Par 3, 199 yards

Harrington is really finding his form now. He misses the green with his tee-shot but claws it back with a superb chip and run shot to within an inch of the pin.

Goosen pays the price for a terrible first putt, bogeying to come back to evens.

Furyk -1, Harrington -1, Goosen E, Immelman +6

Hole 18 - Home

Par 5, 521 yards

Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk go neck and neck into round two with birdie finishes on the most picturesque hole of the lot.

With the crystal clear ocean shimmering in the background, Harrington sinks another fine putt to finish two-under. Furyk does likewise and the two guys with course experience lead the field.

Immelman, who has had a nightmare on the greens, misses an easier birdie chance to finish six over and out of it. Goosen is still in with a shot on evens, but would have hoped to pick up a shot here.

Furyk -2, Harrington -2, Goosen E, Immelman +6 n[[In-content Ad]]
