Mansfield's four tries too much for Police
The second match of the day saw Renegades and Teachers vying for top of the table honours. Neither side was giving an inch in a game that showcased committed defensive work over offensive execution. Of the two teams, coach Alvin Harvey's Teachers side looked the more organized. Kristie Koza opened the scoring for the Reds with a nice break after some good flowing passes. Teacher's super star winger Katie Wright looked a constant threat out wide but she found the tenacious marking of her opposite number Melissa Field too difficult to get through. With opportunities out wide being shut down the Teachers methodically worked the ball up the middle with a fit looking Sarah "Bruiser" McHugh-Wheddon making a great break only to be denied a try by a desperate covering tackle of Ruth Booleston. Teachers stuck to their determined game plan and after some tight running and quick recycling, Jenny Crawford finished off a good passage of play to extend her sides lead to 2-0. Renegades responded with a well worked move that released the lightning quick pace of Melissa Field who went around her opposite number like a hoop around a barrel to score in the corner, closing the margin to 2-1. Teachers shuffled their players positions astutely and thus created an opening for Amy Wright to break through down the middle. Once again thought the mercurial Wright was closed down by the back tracking of Melissa Field. Wright showed considerable poise to recycle quickly and pop off to a hard charging BDA national soccer team star Chloe Martin to restore the two try buffer- 3-1 to Teachers. Renegades refused to capitulate and veteran Amy Harvey's fine weaving run closed the margin to 3-2 to set up a nail biting last two minutes but it was a case of too little too late and the ladies in Red secured a well deserved 3-2 win.[[In-content Ad]]
