Children’s charity The Sunshine League is holding its annual walk-a-thon to help raise funds for its various projects.

On September 25, you can enjoy the 10-mile Moon Walk from Warwick Playground to Church Bay and back again while helping to raise money for some of the island’s most needy children.

The Sunshine League funds a residential care facility for displaced children aged between eight and sixteen years of age.  Money raised from the event will help with the upkeep of the home which is in need of numerous repairs.

Participants can register on the day from 6pm at the starting point in Warwick Playground. Participants can pre-register and obtain pledge forms online at www.sunshineleague.bm, via the charity’s Facebook page or at the League or Sportseller in the Washington Mall in Hamilton. Registration is $20 for adults and $5 for under 12s. There is an iPad prize for the participant with the highest pledges.

Participants are asked to collect their pledges and submit them when everyone meets at the playground ahead of the walk.

On arrival, there will be a charity representative speaking about the Sunshine League along with a picnic. After a short warmup the walk begins and there will be refreshments at Church Bay.

Fund development director Sarah Dunstan said: “A lot of the funds we raise will go either into completing one of the many projects we have going on here or into our general operating fund just to keep the doors open. We are at capacity and have been for quite some time. We have high expenses mostly in the form of our staffing needs. Then there is the upkeep of the house. One of the projects is our sinks project — 11 sinks are being replaced as well as the bathrooms.

“We are also reaching out to companies to see if they do matching gifts programmes — a lot of professionals who are getting pledges can get those pledges matched, which is wonderful.

“This walk is good for anyone — we have had a lot of families do it in the past as it’s cooler and the humidity is not as high. It is also on a Saturday so you won’t have that rush hour traffic to deal with. There will be plenty of parking at the park.”

Last year the charity celebrated its 90th anniversary and held a special Moon Walk out of Dockyard.
