It's time to speak up and let your voice be heard

It has been made abundantly clear to me, time and again, that every coin has two sides.

Of course, if someone was to flip that coin over and over again, the results are likely to be split evenly between heads and tails.

You might be forgiven for thinking that that coin opener doesn't have much to do with golf, however, like the ongoing coin flip, you'd be half right and half wrong. How this relates to golf is that, like the coin, every story also has two sides.

On Wednesday, December 16, the Bermuda Golf Association is planning a members' meeting which is intended to be the first of a series of regular meetings with its members. Frankly, it's an opportunity to talk.

I find it interesting how information is greeted by those who claim they wish to be kept informed. It always seems to me that people only like to be informed if the information is to their liking.

However, like coins and stories, anybody who likes what they hear more than half the time is in fact well ahead of the game.

People are even inclined to complain when they receive good news.

On December 18 and 19, the BGA will be holding a qualifier to determine the two men who will represent Bermuda in Argentina in January at the Copa de las Americas event.

Fifteen invitations have been sent out and two men will earn the privilege to represent Bermuda.

According to the grapevine, not everybody is happy, however, for the record, that's just par for the course.

The methods used by the BGA to select such teams has been criticized ever since I was in line for possible selection and that, dare I think about it, was 30 years ago.

The Bermuda Golf Association then, as today, has two primary objectives to meet.

One is that it will always wish to send its best possible team to any given event. The second is to give as many of our capable players the chance to earn the privilege of representing their country.

The two objectives are really no-brainers and the vast majority of players would agree that these two objectives are worthy of achieving.

However, disagreement always arises on how to achieve the two objectives and that has been the contentious issue for decades. Frankly, I would be willing to bet sixpence that it will remain a contentious issue going forward.

Debate is healthy and the BGA is hoping that it will see at least 100 members come out on Wednesday, December 16 to the Members' Meeting.

The meeting is to be held at OVGC starting at 6:30pm with closing time being up to the Members themselves.

The BGA is working hard to communicate better. The Members' Meeting is intended to provide a forum for open discussion and for the passing of information from the BGA to its members.

So, Members, come out on Wednesday, December 16 for the Members' Meeting. I'm willing to bet another sixpence that you will like more than half of what you hear.[[In-content Ad]]
