It’s time for young cricketers to shine

Warwick's teenage batsman Stephen Bremar jnr and promising opener Treadwell Gibbons jnr are two young prospects with a chance to put themselves in the World Cup frame as Bermuda heads to Trinidad this weekend.

Coach Gus Logie had hoped to make the training camp a fine-tuning session for his core squad ahead of a packed summer schedule of tournaments and World Cup warm-up matches.

But with a catalogue of players injured, unavailable or in some cases apparently uninterested in turning out for the national team, the focus has changed.

Among those unavailable are skipper Clay Smith, and vice-captain Janiero Tucker, Fast-bowler Ryan Steede, and a host of others. Logie said that in the light of so many absences the entire focus of the tour had changed.

“It’s an opportunity to continue some of the work we have been doing and to ensure the players are familiar with the conditions because we will be playing in Trinidad during the World Cup.

“The whole intention was to have one of our best squads going down there but with so many people missing we couldn't do that.

“It’s an opportunity for players like young Bremar, Sammy Robinson, Jekon Edness, to show what they can do.

“We’re not just looking at them for this World Cup, but for 2009 and beyond.

“It will be around November before we have everyone available. It's unfortunate but that's the situation. There are some players who we have asked to try out for the national team but for whatever reason they haven't turned up.

“The opportunity is still there for those players but I hope they take it.”

He said he would be looking for Gibbons to open the batting during the tour.

“He played in Scotland and Mr Parfitt (former Bermuda skipper Clarence) spoke to me about him and said he had a lot of potential. He’s shown a bit of commitment in training and this is an opportunity for him as a left handed batsman to show what he can add to the team.”

Bremar, a late call up after Kwame Tucker pulled out, is also someone Logie believes has a lot of potential. “He’s only 16 or 17 but he's had some good scores in domestic cricket and this is a chance for him also.”

Bermuda will play three 50-over matches against local opposition and will get their first taste of competitive 20/20 cricket with two matches over the shortened format.[[In-content Ad]]
