Hundreds enjoy Palm Sunday walk

SUNDAY, APR. 1: More than 1400 people today (Sunday) took part in the traditional Palm Sunday walk organised by the Bermuda National Trust.

Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Lady Gozney, as well as Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith and Cabinet colleague Patrice Minors, were among the hundreds who took part in the event, sponsored by insurance group Argus.

National Trust director of development Kelly Way said the numbers taking part were down on previous years – although a downpour around the time the five mile walk through the sights of Smith’s Parish was due to start may have put some off.

Ms Way said: “It was a very good day – the walk went through a few private estates, which people very kindly agreed to let us go through.”

The walk also took in the National Trust’s Verdmont Museum, Spittal Pond and the island’s highest point, on the parish’s Peak Road.

Ms Way thanked drinks giant Barritt’s for providing water and energy drinks along the route for the walkers and Argus for its sponsorship.

She said: “Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. This is the 39^th year we have organised a Palm Sunday walk – we’ve been doing it a long time and it’s always an enjoyable and interesting day.”
