How women golfers are leading the way
Maybe true, maybe not so true, however, there is a crystal clear golf example that shows that the women club golfers in Bermuda are certainly more progressive than the men.
There is, and I believe there has been for some time now, a series of periodic golf matches that are referred to as the Women's Interclub Matches, or something close to that, which is somewhat similiar to the old Amstel League. What they most certainly seem to do is bring competitive women players together to compete.
Simply put, it is a brilliant idea and the men need to ask themselves why they are not doing something similar.
A Men's Interclub Golf League should be relatively simple to get off the ground. Let's say that there are six golf clubs that would be qualified to participate, these being PRGC, RBGC, Belmont, OVGC, MOC and TP. There could be six matches per year, with each Club hosting one event per year. Each Club could field a team of four (or 6) players and the total strokes taken by each player on each team would determine each team's score for the day. Points could be allocated to each team based on the results of the day, with the team with the most points at the end of the season being the winning Club.
That would be just one way of setting up a Men's Interclub Golf League. In my opinion, Bermuda golf needs more competition and an Interclub Golf League just might help create a bit of that much needed competition. For instance, each Club in turn would need to determine which 4 (or 6) players it would field at the next Men's Interclub Match. Some form of selection process would need to be identified at the club level, and one would hope that each Club's selection process would be through some form of club competition.
Of course, as with every project, there would be difficult problems to work through. Costs would be just one of several critical issues to overcome if a Men's Interclub Golf League was ever to come to fruition. If I recall correctly, green fees used to be waived, or paid for by Amstel. I believe it would be important that green fees again be waived by each participating Club, otherwise an Interclub Golf League would not likely be supported by the players.
The idea is not new and, if memory serves me well, this is pretty much how the Amstel League used to work. The idea needs fleshing out and I would like to think that the Men's Captains at each club would pick up the idea and develop it further. In the Bermuda golf world of yesteryear, the Amstel Golf League was hugely successful and popular. Today, the Women's Interclub Matches clearly demonstrate that such a concept is alive and well and just waiting to be exploited. It is way past time that the Men caught up with the Women. The men may not have been smart enough to implement Interclub Golf Matches but surely we are smart enough to know a good idea when we see one.
Aren't we?
