How to enter your art in the biggest exhibition around

Stressed out about the 2006 Bacardi Limited Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Bermuda Art?

If you’re an artist you might be — the deadline for artwork is on January 6. Artists can submit up to five works to be considered for the exhibition at the Bermuda National Gallery. This year there is also an application fee of $35 to cover additional administration staff to collate all the application information. The eligibility requirements are as follows: All applicants must be at least 18-years-old on December 31, 2005.

Applications are open to all Bermudians, resident in Bermuda or overseas, and foreign nationals who have been resident on the island for at least six months during the preceding two years (January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005).

Artwork must have been completed during the period of January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2005.

All artwork must be available for viewing by the jury on February 8. This is also true for photographs — all submitted photographs must be viewable in printed form.

Submissions must include a two page application form completed and signed and one 35mm slide for each submission or a JPEG digital format on disk. Slides (images) must be labelled with artist’s name, title of work, size, medium and top indicated. No changes or additions (except for framing) can be made to the artwork after slides/digital images have been submitted. A Biography, electronic submissions preferred, must be included in either a narrative biography of 500 words or less, or listings under the following headings: Education, Workshops, Solo exhibitions, (Selected) Group Exhibition, Commissions, Publications or Awards. Submissions must also include an Artist Statement of 60 words or less and a photo of the artist.

The Bermuda National Gallery adds that if you plan to submit a film or installation piece, please contact the curator before you submit to clarify if the proposal is possible in the National Gallery space. Artists that are living overseas and unable to get their work to the jury viewing on February 8 will be juried by slide.

The jury is also able to view a limited number of oversize and heavy works in situ.

If you are submitting any large or heavy works that would be difficult to transport to the Jury viewing on February 8, contact the Bermuda National Gallery curator by February 1 to make arrangements for the jury to visit works.

To make it a little easier for artists, we asked one of the jurors for the Biennial, Annette Blaugrund, exactly what she was looking for.

Dr. Blaugrund, Director at the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Art, has already been to Bermuda twice before on vacation, and is looking forward to jurying the Biennial 2006. On the right we ask her six questions.[[In-content Ad]]
