How can we make sure our 'donations' do the trick?

Subject: Bermuda fundraiser

Hi Bob,

The new Premier of Bermuda is having a big political fundraiser. We've got so many things up in the air right now - work permits, good corporate citizenship, key employee applications, it might be smart to throw some money into the pot. What do you think?

How much are we talking about?

They've got all these different packages, but if you're going to do it, you might as well go all the way. The $25,000 "platinum package" is for 10 VIP tickets to an R&B concert, green fees for the Premier's Golf Tournament, tickets to a Gala Reception and Black Tie Ball, a seat at a "Premier's Roundtable Breakfast", photo ops with the Premier and tickets to some secret special event.

We can't do that kind of stuff. The Federal Elections Commission will be all over us!

No worries, Bob, there is no Elections Commission here. People can give whatever they want to a political party or a politician… and nobody has to report it! Even foreigners.

You've got to be kidding! How do they stop people from giving loads of money to a politician who's going to make important decisions for them? What do they do to stop politicians from taking money in return for … well, in return for whatever they think their money is meant to buy?

They don't!

Yeah, but when you guys show up at this Premier's Gala, everybody will know you're involved. They'll know Insureco.Re is paying off the Government. Maybe that's okay over there, but if they find out up here in the States…

Hi Bob,

That's the really annoying thing - I don't know if it IS okay over here or not. I don't really know what the money's for.

Maybe I have to fork the money over if I want to get the Government to cooperate with Scamco.re, but maybe that's the last thing on their minds. I can't ask, that's for sure. And I can't afford to take chances by NOT giving money.

Do you remember, Dr. Brown is the guy who had us come to this fundraising luncheon in DC a couple of years back, when Scamco Investments was bidding for the Bermuda Pension Fund contract?

We never got the job; those are the breaks, but because of the fundraising lunch, it's hard not to wonder if maybe we just didn't give enough.

I guess we don't actually have to show up for this Gala thing.

The premier and his party just have to know we PAID up. It's an outrageous amount but what are we supposed to do? All those applications we have in …let alone the ones we're going to need down the road.

I was speaking to this hotel guy yesterday who wants to build lots of residential units and needs permission from planning, tourism, just about everybody. He says he's going to buy two tables, and send his wife to Waffles with Wanda or whatever it is. Boy is he steamed….though not as much as his wife J.

Your Dr. Brown sounds like quite the mover. Go ahead, get the platinum package - the gala weekend, the photo op, the golf, the roundtable, the waffles - the works. Just make sure it's paid from Bermuda so we don't have to report it.

Then keep on top of this guy. We need to get our money's worth.

Bob
