Herod's abuse of power relevant now

By Rev. Dr. Maria Seaman- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

Let's face it. King Herod was the gangster of his day, in charge of the streets of Jerusalem. King Herod had power and rule over all that was going on in Jerusalem, and he was not ready or willing to give up that power for a new king.

That's the thing about power; it takes hold of people in a most profound way. Power is an aphrodisiac of great magnitude, tranquilizing its victim to the point where the victim often victimizes others, and is unaffected by the devastation and demonic destruction he has caused.

King Herod was infused with a false power. I say false because those who have real power are never intimidated by anyone else. Those with true power wrapped in dignity never seek to kill, steal, and destroy .Yet, here we have Herod. Herod got the message that there was a new sheriff in town. In other words, Herod found out that a new king had been born; and even though that new king was only a baby, that baby represented real potential, because you never know exactly where potential will take you.

So, King Herod, in fear of the potential of the newborn king, devised a plan. King Herod inquired of certain people to seek out the location of baby Jesus so that he might worship him. What a lie that was!

That mobster King Herod did not want to worship baby Jesus. No, he wanted to wound baby Jesus.

King Herod was eager to find and kill the newborn king because he thirsted for continuous power. King Herod never wanted his reign to end and so he desired to end the life of a precious young baby.

The good news is that those men had a relationship with God. That was important because God was able to warn them to go another way. God was able to thwart the plan of the murderous King Herod because there were those people who would hear and obey His voice.

HEROD MIND-SET

During this time in Bermuda, with the mindset of King Herod amongst us - a mind-set to destroy the potential of others, I believe that we must desire for people to have an ear to hear what the Spirit of God will say.

Understand that we have the power of choice. We can choose to do what King Herod wanted or we can do the wise thing and go another way.

Bermuda, the only way to change the outcome is to go another way. Respice finem.

Dr. Maria A. Seaman is the Pastor of Shekinah Worship Centre, currently worshipping at The Victor Scott Primary School Auditorium, Glebe Road, Pembroke.
