Hemp and Hurdle bright spots on losing tour

Under-19s show promise for the future with good performances

An Ali combination delivered the knockout blow as Bermuda's winter tour ended in another defeat - this time to an unfancied United Arab Emirates side in Dubai.

Centuries from Arshad Ali and Saqib Ali carried the home side to victory, despite Bermuda's promising start.

It was a game, which told the story of the whole tour - brief moments of hope and glory followed by collapse and ultimately defeat.

The tour yielded just one victory - in a warm-up match with Uganda. But there were some promising individual performances and even in defeat, this was a much better tour than the European disaster earlier this year.

James Whittaker takes a look at what the stats tell us about Bermuda's performance.

Deputised as opener after Stephen Outerbridge went home injured but did little to seriously advance his cause.

Contributed 30 in an opening stand of 58 - Bermuda's best for some time - against the Kenyans, but had no other scores of note.

A mixed tour for Jekon, who showed some improvement with the bat in the limited overs game.

He's been marked out as a talent for a long-time and returned on his potential with an innings of 72 against Kenya, suggesting he could lock down one of the openers spots in future. The 72 was Bermuda's fourth best score in the one-day game.

Struggled in the four-day game with a pair against the Kenyans but was missed behind the stumps when he sat out the UAE game because of an illness.

If someone somewhere is keeping stats on the record number of ducks in a season, Irving Romaine had better watch out.

Three more zeroes here to add to the Bermuda skipper's growing collection. He redeemed himself somewhat with a half-century in the ODI with Kenya and some reasonable scores in the four-day game.

But the captain remains short of form and will have expected more from himself.

Stephen Outerbridge

Limited Overs Stats

Total Runs: 36

Top Score: 34

Avg: 7.2

Rivalling his captain in the duck race, Outerbridge notched up another three zeroes. Had one good knock of 34 in the opening game against Uganda but is still struggling to turn his enormous potential into results on the international stage.

His tour was cut short by injury and he did not feature in the four-day games.

James Celestine

A difficult tour for Celestine who failed to contribute significantly in either format.

He's looked the part on previous occasions but struggled badly here. Mustering only two innings of note.

Returned to the side with a bang, where his explosive middle order batting added an extra dimension for Bermuda.

Played a match-winning innings against Uganda in the opening game and made solid contributions in all the limited overs matches.

Struggled in the four-day matches and seems more suited, as a player, to the one-day game.

Bowled some tidy spells in both formats, taking 3 for 29 against the UAE.

Suffered a miserable run of form in the one-day game, but proved the old adage that form is temporary and class permanent, with his performances in the four-day game.

His runs, including a massive century against the UAE, held Bermuda together in the Intercontinental Cup and made a mockery of the calls for his head.

Lionel Cann

Limited Overs Stats

Total Runs: 150

Top Score: 73

Avg: 30

Started the tour in blistering form digging Bermuda out of a hole on more than one occasion.

Though he has always averaged in the late 30s early 40s for Bermuda, his score of 73 against Uganda was his highest for some time.

His tour was derailed by the incident in the second ODI against Kenya where he reacted badly to a suspect umpiring decision and was subsequently sent home by the BCB, playing no part in the four-day matches.

Cann still has Bermuda's yop average in one-day averages with a 30.17.

Bowled just once, against Uganda, taking 2 for 47 in six overs.

Rodney Trott

The performance of the under-19 captain was one of the high points of the tour for Bermuda.

Selected with one eye on the future, Trott showed he can be a key player for Bermuda, now. One of the top wicket-takers in the limited overs game, Trott also showed himself to be a capable batsman, earning himself a move up the order for the four-day format.

Struggled at first in the longer game but did manage 43 from the openers slot and toiled thanklessly with the ball on a pitch that did not suit spinners.

Malachi Jones

It's testament to what a key player Malachi Jones has become for Bermuda, that he bowled more overs than any other player in the one-day format.

Both Jones and his U-19 team-mate Trott were up there with the top performers on tour. The encouraging thing is that unlike some of their senior team-mates, these two have many years of improvement ahead of them.

This was a decent, if unspectacular tour, from Jones, but his best is yet to come.

Kevin Hurdle

Limited Overs Stats

Overs: 36

Wickets: 8

Runs conceded: 178

Best Bowling: 4 for 40

ER: 4.94

Four-Day Stats

Overs: 81

Wickets: 14

Runs conceded: 266

Best Bowling: 6 for 45

Avg: 19

Refreshed from his enforced break, Hurdle roared back into action, leading the attack with his best figures for some time.

A ten-wicket haul against the UAE capped a brilliant tour for the pace man who was at his dangerous best. Overall he took 22 wickets on the tour.

Swiped some lusty blows with the bat at the tail-end of the innings with a run a ball average.

Dwayne Leverock

Limited Overs Stats

Overs: 40

Wickets: 7

Runs conceded: 144

Best Bowling: 3 for 28

Avg: 20.57

ER: 3.6

Four-Day Stats

Overs: 92

Wickets: 4

Runs conceded: 238

Best Bowling: 4 for 113

Avg: 59.5

It's a measure of Leverock's consistency that another immaculate performance in the limited overs game went practically unnoticed. He had the top average and the top economy rate of any Bermudian bowler in the one-day format.

His stats took a beating against the UAE in the four-day game, but this was another solid display from the big man.

Tamuari Tucker, Kyle Hodsoll, Jason Simmons

The three squad players got their first taste of top level international cricket and all three did pretty well.

Tucker and Hodsoll, members of the under-19 squad, picked up their first wickets and did well enough to suggest they could mix it at this level.

And Simmons, drafted in for the UAE game after Cann was sent home, kept it respectable with scores of 15 and 23.
