'He just destroyed everybody'
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22: Newly crowned US Open champion Rory Mcllroy is living proof that dreams can come true if you put your heart and soul into it.
The 22-year-old Northern Irishman captured a first major after obliterating the field at the Congressional Country Club earlier this week.
Mcllroy carded a record four-day total of 16 under par to finish eight-shots clear of nearest rival Jason Day.
He is the youngest golfer in the past 88 years to win the US Open and is now eligible to compete in October’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Port Royal — should he accept the invitation to play.
Awestruck local pro Daniel Augustus believes the sky is the limit for world golf’s newest sensation who he claims can help aspiring athletes.
He said: “Rory is definitely a role model and an inspiration to any young athlete around the world. By winning the US Open he has shown young people that no matter what challenges you may have you can achieve your dreams if you put your mind into it.
“He just destroyed everybody. He broke Tiger’s record as far as the lowest score in the open — which is no small feat. Finishing 16 shots under par at the US Open is unheard of.
“His swing is just flawless — it’s perfect. Rory is just awesome. His personality is calm; he is so laid back.
“He has created such a buzz and he is someone I really want to see.”
Augustus reckons Mcllroy has the weapons in his arsenal to make a serious assault on the record books.
“He is just awesome and I think he has the ability to tear up a lot of Tiger’s records,” he added. “Rory reminds me so much of Tiger when he was younger — bomb it straight down the middle with a swing that everyone wants. I love the guy as far as his golf game goes.”
Augustus led the local field at the recent Bermuda Open at Port Royal after finishing the 72-hole event at 13 shots over par.
Horrible
Yet despite finishing third overall and pocketing $1,500 in prize earnings the 24-year-old pro was far from pleased with his display on the course.
He said: “Some people may look at me funny but I am disappointed because you always want to win. You can’t win everything but if you don’t go into a tournament with a winning mentality then why are you playing?
“I thought I had a realistic chance of winning with ease. I felt I should’ve done better but my putting was horrible.
“I hit the ball great but my putting was just atrocious. And Port Royal is a course where if you put yourself in the wrong position you can shoot a few over par real easily. That’s just how Port Royal is, it’s a fine line between good and bad.”
Jordan Mitchell claimed overall Bermuda Open honours by two-shots over last year’s runner up Brennan Webb.
