WEDNESDAY, OCT. 24: Padraig Harrington clinched victory at Port Royal today to be crowned the 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf champion.
The three–time Major winner filled a notable hole on his impressive CV by making it third-time lucky in Bermuda and winning the event that eluded him when he finished runner-up in 2007 and 2008 at Mid-Ocean.
The Irishman continued his scintillating form from day one, carding a four-under 67 to finish nine under and win by one shot from Webb Simpson. Bubba Watson slipped to three-under after a double bogey at 16 to tie for third with Keegan Bradley, who went four under for the day.
“You think I’d look good at the disco tonight in this?”, said Harrington after slipping on the winner’s traditional fetching pink jacket.
He added: “It’s never easy leading a golf tournament, whether there’s three people behind you or a whole pack.
“It’s always tough when you’re trying to make birdies and I found it tough today. The other guys’ chasing you so you’re always aware of it and you have one eye on him, but you just have to focus on your own game.
“Yesterday I played beautifully tee to green but today I hit a few bad shots in the range and it got into my head a little bit. But I was really pleased that when I got into it the old fight was there and I made a couple of big putts, especially the one on 16 – I was chuffed with that.”
