WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10: In an announcement today Clement Talbot, chairman of the Ross “Blackie” Talbot Charity Classic (RBTCC), announced the distribution of $85,000 in RBT education awards to 10 deserving students.

Mr. Talbot said, “We had a record number of applicants this year and it is very much regretted that we do not have the financial resources to assist every one of the worthy students who applied for a RBT education award.

“However, it gives me great pleasure to advise we are able to provide $85,000 in RBT education awards to 10 deserving students.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank our lead sponsor – HSBC Bank Bermuda, our many sponsors and the community for the tremendous support you all have unhesitatingly given to the RBTCC which, in turn, has permitted us to provide these scholarships.”

Receiving the awards were: David-Vernon Bean, Michiko Campbell, Khamani Fox, Kejon Sampson, Kendra Simons, Sherlina Thomas, Aaron Bassett, Winston Godwin, Tia Kipps, and Uthmani Talbot.

Philip Butterfield, CEO of HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited, the lead sponsor for the RBTCC, said, “It is always so wonderful to witness our young Bermudian students excel in their endeavors of further education. Supporting education is one of the major areas of focus for the HSBC group, and I am proud that here in Bermuda we  are  in a position to support educating our young people.  I wish to congratulate all  of the students on their achievements to date and encourage them to continue to strive for academic excellence.”

Jeanne Atherden, (chairman of the RBT education awards selection committee) said, "Our ability to award scholarships is the direct result of the overwhelming support that RBTCC received from the community as well as the most generous support of our sponsors and our very successful, RBT raffle.”

These funds were allocated to the education awards from the successful 2011 Ross “Blackie” Talbot Charity Classic (RBTCC) fund raising efforts.  To date the RBTCC has donated a total more than $470,000 in education awards to more than 34 students.

Mrs. Atherden continued, "I, personally and on behalf of us all, wish to thank the members of the screening and selection committees for giving freely of their time resulting in the selection of these most worthy students."

Mr. Talbot continued, “We all find it most gratifying that the RBTCC will be able to help these 10 deserving young Bermudians to further their education, permitting them to obtain their respective degrees. Our community at large ultimately will benefit from their qualifications, skills and knowledge.

“In closing I would like to extend our hearty congratulations, to each and every one of you for your pursuit of a higher education which will permit you to assume positions of responsibility in our community.”
