Gilbertson pushed to the brink but survives

FRIDAY, JULY 6: The rain held off over Belmont Hills Golf Course for the quarterfinal round of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association’s Phoenix Match Play Championships on Wednesday and the top eight players in each division were in action. 

Cory DeSilva, fresh off his upset victory over Khari Place in round one, pushed top seed and defending champion, Scott Gilbertson, all the way to the 18th hole.

However, Scott held Cory off for a 1 up victory. Scott will play Mitchell Campbell in the first semi-final, who saw off his younger brother Walker by a margin of 4&3 to take home family bragging rights.

Medallist and number two seed Thomas Allkins was also tested today, holding off Justin Dixon-Watts 2&1 to move into the semi-finals.

The most exciting match of the day was a back and forth affair between number three seed Arriek Douglas and the sixth seed Sam Wehmeyer. 

After being three down through eight holes, Arriek stood on the 17th tee leading by a 2 up margin, however, a bogey at 17 and a ball out of bounds on 18 opened the door for Sam to square the match and force extra holes.

Sam then drained a long birdie putt on the 21st hole to complete the upset, setting up a semi-final clash with Thomas Allkins.

The Open Red division gave us the most surprising result of the week so far, with number eight seed Jordan Saunders upsetting the medallist and number one seed Kheary Swan 6&5.

The other three quarterfinals saw the lower seeds all prevail. Mikus Ming defeated William Gray 6&4 to set up a semi-final against Jordan and Dakota Lamb defeated Theo Wolffe 6&5.

The final match of the day saw James Robertson push Joe Waters all the way to the 18th, however, Joe showed his resolve and won the last for a 2 up victory.
