Living on a small island where almost everything is imported makes it difficult to obtain things that are easily available overseas. This is true in the automotive industry, too, when you need a part to repair your vehicle.

Think about all the different vehicles you see on the road in Bermuda, from family cars to commercial trucks.

Then consider that the average vehicle requires more than 20,000 parts.

Just do the math and you will see that it is impossible for each and every part to be in stock at all times.

When a dealership brings in a new model of vehicle, they also receive a listing of recommended spare parts that are most likely to be needed for maintenance and repairs on that particular model.

Service

Since we are in a remote location, we try to enhance the list of recommended spare parts by also stocking more of the commonly used and critically needed parts, such as filters, brake pads and disks.

But there will still be times when your vehicle requires a part that is not in stock.

Call ahead prior to the work to check if they have a part and if a service centre can even repair your vehicle — some dealerships only service the makes and models of vehicles they import.

Make sure the service centre you choose is qualified and experienced in repairing your particular vehicle model.

Sometimes you will know ahead of time which parts will be needed to repair your vehicle, such as if your vehicle is in an accident. The insurance company requires a garage to examine the damage and provide an estimate prior to bringing it in for repair.

In this situation, it does not hurt to check that the service centre has the parts on-hand before your vehicle arrives.

It could save you the inconvenience of making multiple trips.

Other common parts are add-ons to your vehicle and not necessarily required for its function.

It is common for vehicle owners to modify or enhance their cars to express their personal taste.

From performance and trim packages to interior and electronic accessories, the options for customisation seem endless.

Apart from a home purchase, a car is one of the largest financial expenditures many people make, so if you decide to customise your vehicle it pays to be smart.

Vehicles have computers, complex electrical and diagnostic systems that can easily be damaged during the installation of accessories if a technician does not have the proper training.

This is why it is important to ensure the technician working on your vehicle has the required experience with the right tools and facilities.

You will avoid costly mistakes if you work through your dealer or a recommended third-party vendor.

Your dealer will offer a complete line of manufacturer or OEM accessories.

You can also ask for a list of vendors who import the appropriate accessories for your vehicle.
