Dwayne's in the swing

He’s back!

Veteran golfer Dwayne Pearman came out of exile to capture this week’s Jack Daniel’s Tour event at Mid Ocean Club by three shots over nearest rival Daniel Augustus.

The 48-year-old pro carded a three-under-par 68 that included an eagle at the par five second hole and three birdies.

Pearman, who is a multiple winner on the inaugural Jack Daniel’s Tour, has put his own game on hold to assist in his son’s (Dwayne Jr.) development.

He said: “I’m just coming back from a nice long break — I really haven’t played too much golf in the last year and a half. I took a bit of time off because my son is starting to play and I am trying to help him. My focus these days is to get my son up and going to help him succeed. I think he has lots of potential and talent but must work hard if he’s to be successful. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t put in the hard work you won’t be successful.”

Pearman has also been bogged down with his duties as head pro at Port Royal, hosts for this year’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

He added: “I don’t get the chance to play as much since I took on the job at Port Royal. But now I’m forcing myself to get out on the course and practice and play a bit more.”

The well-respected Southampton resident has tentative plans to play in a few smaller events on the U.S. east coast should the opportunity present itself.

“It all depends on my work schedule at Port Royal,” he added. “As head pro I cannot just get up and go off to play golf overseas. But if the chance comes my way I may play in some of the smaller tournaments in Florida.”

As for his win, Pearman said: “It was a pretty good round. There was a bit of breeze down there and I felt as though I played pretty decent golf.”

Apart from a minor kink in his short game, Pearman is generally satisfied with his current form.

“My chipping is a bit off but my long game is good,” he added. “I was pretty pleased with the way I hit the ball and I also putted pretty good.”
