Why Did I Get Married Too ***
Stars: Tyler Perry, Janet Jackson, Tasha Smith, Malik Yoba
Director: Tyler Perry
Rated: PG-13
Runtime: 120 minutes
Drama/comedy
Prolific writer/director/producer Tyler Perry’s sequel to his 2007 smash-hit comedy-drama Why Did I Get Married — and his first follow-up not to feature foul-mouthed senior Madea.
But the intimate week in the Bahamas is interrupted by an unexpected visitor who wreaks havoc on one couple’s relationship.
Each set of spouses then realizes they have their own marital issues to confront, ranging from a lack of trust to boredom.
The movie flits between drama and comedy although none of the gags are a patch on last year’s similar-themed Couples Retreat.
Perry steps out from behind the camera to play nice guy Terry, who is on the marriage retreat to reconnect with his wife Dianne.
But the breakout performance is from Tasha Smith reprising her role as sassy and loud Angela, who suspects her hubby Marcus is cheating.
A lot of the dialogue sounds like it comes from a self-help manual — apt considering Janet Jackson plays a psychologist who pens such books.
The movie doesn’t really evolve from the first one — it’s the same couples with more problems, just in a different setting.
Basically it’s just two hours of couples yelling at each other and making marriage seem like a nightmare.
