Bridesmaids ****
Genre: Comedy
Rating: R
Director: Paul Feig
Actors: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph
From uber comedy producer Judd Apatow comes the breakout summer hit of 2011, Bridesmaids.
It has been described as The Hangover, for women. Although true to certain degree, it has a more feminine sensibility that makes it less raunchy then it’s comparison. Directed by Paul Feig and staring the hilarious Kristen Wiig from Saturday Night Live, who SNL executive producer Lorene Michaels has described as one of the top three comedians ever on that show, which is really saying a lot.
Bridesmaids is a very good romantic comedy best enjoyed on a date or with girlfriends. The movie centres around the friendship of Annie (Kristen Wiig) and Lillian (Maya Rudolph). When Lillian gets engaged, she chooses Annie to be her maid of honour. Annie is not really up the task and finds it to be a difficult job when Lillian’s new friend Helen (Rose Byrne), is competing with her to land the maid spot. Helen’s competitiveness puts a lot stress on the friendship between Annie and Lillian, throughout the shower, bachelorette party and a dress fitting.
It is sharply written and well acted, especially by Kristen Wiig who has terrific audience rapport. And while it has R rated humour, it also has some tender scenes that show real depth of friendship.
As one blogger wrote, "Bridesmaids is touching, funny and a tiny bit sickening. Just like a real wedding".
