Cutfield scores Police winner
It was all running rugby on week one of the league season because of the absence of posts at the Dockyard field.
The posts, though, are on the island and should be up for week two bringing drop-goals, conversions and penalty kicks back into play.
In the opening game of the weekend Police beat Mariners 10-5.
It was a hard fought, scrappy affair, punctuated with numerous injuries from both sides.
Mariners scored first through Paul Clarke following a period of sustained forward pressure.
About five minutes later, Andrew Flint and Rob Steinhoff combined to put Jonathan Cassidy clear to level the scores at 5-5.
Iain MacLeod was held-up over the line twice early in the second-half. Strong defence and the accurate boot of Lachlan 'Lockie' Armour gave Mariners hope before Police centre Doug Davies broke from 60 yards out, eventually getting the ball back to his midfield partner Adam Cutfield for the winning score.
Teachers beat Renegades 10-5 in the day's other match. David Porter and Steve Lusher were the try-scorers for Teachers with defending champs Renegades, who won three-out-of-three in last week's pre-season tournament, replying through Scott Slater.
Dave Worsfold, chairman of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union, said it was shaping up to be a close and competitive season.[[In-content Ad]]
