CURB to screen film about African heritage holiday
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30: Anti racism group CURB is to screen a documentary about Kwanzaa — the week-long secular holiday honouring African American heritage.
The Black Candle is described by CURB as “a vibrant documentary film that uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African Diaspora experience. Narrated by world renowned poet Dr. Maya Angelou, provides both historical depth and contemporary relevance and is an extraordinary, inspirational story about the struggle and triumph of family, community, and culture.”
The Black Candle is filmed around the United States, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean and looks into why the seven principals of Kwanzaa (unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith) remain relevant today. The film traces the late December and New Year holiday’s growth from the first celebration in 1966, to its present day celebrated by more than 20 million people around the world.
The “all-star cast” includes NFL legend Jim Brown, hip hop icon Chuck D, Kwanzaa’s founder Dr Maulana Karenga, artist Synthia Saint James and others.
The Black Candle screens for free at Chewstick headquarters on the corner of Court and Elliott Street on Wednesday, December 7 at 6pm.
