Cleveland's young guns think they can win BELCO Cup

Young Cleveland skipper Tamauri Tucker hopes his side can upset the odds this weekend to claim BELCO Cup glory.

The 20-year-old spinner, one of Bermuda's top young players has stepped up to the captaincy role this season.

And he hopes the experience he has gained with the national team and in the BCB's high performance programme will help him in his new leadership role.

The first target for Tucker is to bounce back from successive defeats in the Open cricket last weekend and challenge the big boys in the BELCO Cup.

"We've been trying a few different players but we will have our full strength side out this weekend.

"We're going to face two tough games but we're training real hard to win the BELCO Cup."

Cleveland have also brought in former national coach Allan Douglas as head coach this season and Tucker feels they are in good shape for the new season.

He highlighted teenage pace bowler Daz Simons and Kian Butterfield, a winter signing from Warwick, as two players to watch this weekend.

And the flighty off-spinner believes he is in good form himself.

"I'm feeling pretty sharp, my bowling has been spot on so far and I'm working on my batting," added Tucker, who is hoping to make the Somerset Cup Match squad this year.

"I volunteered to be skipper and I'm doing as well as I can. We're serious this year," added the youngster, who has targeted a top four spot and victory in the Eastern County as his main aims for the season.

Cleveland face the tough route to BELCO Cup glory, coming up against league champions Social Club, who have fast bowler Kevin Hurdle back in the frame for Saturday's semi-final.

But skipper Dwayne Adams said his side would be showing Tucker and his team due respect on Sunday.

"We're not thinking about Rangers yet. We still have to get across Cleveland in the semi-final," said Adams of a potential match-up with the five-time champions on Sunday.

"We have to take each game as it comes and try to come out on top at the end of the weekend.

"Rangers have won it five times in a row so it's a competition they definitely know how to win.

"It's a matter of us going out there and playing as a team. Our aim is to play good positive cricket."[[In-content Ad]]
