SUNDAY, JAN. 8: The Chewstick Foundation held its 9th anniversary fundraiser last night with a rousing show at the City Hall.
The event began with a cocktail reception at 7pm last night followed by the show starting at 8pm.
The house was completely packed with people standing on the sides of the theatre.
Attendees were treated to African drummers and dancers to start the show followed by a reading by Haile Griot.
Chewstick founders Gavin Smith and Najib Chentouf welcomed everyone to the show with a bit of history and a few jokes.
Premier Paula Cox was the distinguished guest of the event.
The acts varied from poetry, rap, spoken word, storytelling, a violinist, reggae and more.
While all the performers were good, Canjelae Taylor, Lynneice Nisbett, Princess Black and Live Wires were my favourite.
Live Wires finished the show with his smash “Gombey Warriors” prompting Gombey’s to come on stage.
They danced out of the theatre and down to Chewstick’s Headquarters on the corner of Court and Elliott Street.
My only complaint was that the show was very long.
It didn’t end up 11:45, which I found to be a bit late.
But all in all, congratulations to Chewstick for nine years of righteous vibes.
