Cann may miss 20-20 final

Master blaster injures himself on artificial turf

Bermuda’s master blaster Lionel Cann is suffering from a groin injury and is struggling to make tomorrow’s Cricket Classic final — which promises to be a momentous occasion at National Stadium.

Cann smashed an unbeaten 35 against England, scaling the stadium perimeter with a series of devastating sixes, and then bowled the crucial final over to propel Bermuda into the final.

But Wednesday’s last-ball victory was a superb team effort with contributions all over the park — not least from stand-in captain Irving Romaine and spin-twins Dwayne Leverock and Hasan Durham.

And Cann believes there is more than enough quality throughout the side for Bermuda to finish the job, even if he does not win his fitness battle.

He said: “The mat was a little slippy the other night and I picked up a groin injury — I don’t know if I’m going to be able to play.

“It would be a disappointment, but when you play sports, you get injuries. I’d love to play in the 20-20 final in front of my home crowd but the object is building towards the World Cup.

“If they want to chance me on Saturday then I’d love to be playing but if I have to sit out for the betterment of the team I'll be happy to sit out.

“We have a tournament coming up in Trinidad and I'll have to make sure I’m ready for that.

“We've got a great nucleus of players, we’ve got youngsters coming through and proving themselves, we have a good system in place. We have everything in place and as long as we follow the guidelines and put our plans into action we can do well.”

Cann's explosive style of play makes him a natural at the 20-20 format and he’s loving every minute of the tournament.

“I enjoy any sort of limited overs game, where you can play aggressive, attacking cricket, particularly in-front of your home crowd.

“I’m talking to different players from every team. I talked to Venkatesh Prasad (India seamer) about swing-bowling, I played golf with Aravinda DeSilva and he was telling me about different ways to play the sweep shot and I saw my best mate Phil Simmons and talked to him.

“There’s a lot of good information. Nothing beats experience.”[[In-content Ad]]
