Cadets show off new skills during passing out parade

SATURDAY, JULY 21: The island’s youngest soldiers have passed out after their annual training camp.

The Bermuda Cadet Corps – soon to be absorbed into the Bermuda Regiment’s Junior Leaders after a 68-year history – paraded for the last time as an independent organization.

Acting Premier Wayne Perinchief – who served in the Regiment before starting a successful career in the police – told the cadets their training was valuable preparation for life.

Mr Perinchief added: “The skills learned are transferable to many other life aspects – leadership, care of others, time keeping personal presentation and respect for seniors.

“It’s a broad-reaching programme open to all of Bermuda’s youth regardless of social position, religious beliefs or schooling.

“It has a rank structure based on performance and merit – as it’s a diverse organization, there is a place for every cadet.”

The cadets showed off their new skills with military exercises, watched by parents and guests, who also included Acting Governor David Arkley.

During the two-week course, which ended on July 13, the cadets learned infantry skills and took part in Outward Bound training, including zip lines and abseiling.

The Cadet Corps will officially combine with the Regiment’s Junior Leaders in September. The Junior Leaders, unlike the Cadets, is directly run by the Regiment and has full access to its expertise, training staff and logistical support.

The Junior Leader programme runs throughout the year and the Commandant, Major Henry Campbell, reminded parents the activities are free.
