By George, Cann they do it again?

St George's skipper Lionel Cann will lead his team into Cup Match tomorrow the only way he knows how - on the offensive.

As champions, the East Enders only need a draw to keep the cup, and when the selection panel revealed a team laden with batsmen on Saturday night it looked like they were preparing to bat for the full two days.

But swashbuckling all-rounder Cann insists he is playing to win - "no question, at all."

The 33-year-old, in his first year as captain, said fans could expect an aggressive, motivated St George's team.

"With me as captain, I am going to make it exciting one way or the other.

"We are not going to give the trophy away but the batting will be attacking, the bowling will be attacking, the field positions will be attacking. I really think we can win it.

"For Somerset to win it, I think we would have to play badly and they would have to play extremely well. If we play to our potential I'm confident we can win the match and the cup."

He said the team was well balanced and was prepared for any tactic Somerset threw at them.

"If they roll a nice pacey wicket then we have the fastest bowler in Bermuda (George O'Brien), if the wicket turns then we have got two spinners in great form (Delyone Borden and Rodney Trott).

"We have got batsmen that can score quickly and we have batsmen who can accumulate runs. We have got the players for any kind of game."

He said the main bowlers on the team - O'Brien, Arthur Pitcher jnr, Delyone Borden and Rodney Trott - were all pretty handy with the bat and the champions would be looking to post a total in excess of 250 to really turn the screw on Somerset.

Cann feels Somerset have a team packed with 'bits and pieces' players that doesn't quite match up to his eleven.

But he is well aware of the threat at the top of the order - particularly from his club mates Janeiro Tucker and Dion Stovell.

Tucker, 31, said he was expecting his side would have to do most of the attacking, with St George's selecting so many batsmen.

"They are going to try and poke around but we will just keep attacking and attacking them for the two days."

He said he had a lot of faith in his team and believed the new boys - Malachi Jones, Dion Stovell, Dean Stephens and Jekon Edness - would have a chance to shine. "They are all good players and I think they'll step up. They're going to be alright. Malachi has been pretty much the best bowler in Bermuda this year so he deserves his chance."

But it is spinners Hasan Durham and Dwayne Leverock that could be Somerset's match-winners, on a pitch that is expected to be dry and conducive to turn.

"They have to lead from the front with the ball and in terms of their leadership on the pitch."

He added that he was relishing playing in front of his home crowd.

"You always want to do it on your home turf. I'm feeling pretty good. I don't feel I have a point to prove I just want to do well and do whatever it takes for my team to win."[[In-content Ad]]
