Boomer Esiason to help with Port Royal's July opening
Port Royal officials are planning an official opening reception on the evening of July 21 and an inaugural Captain's Choice Tournament on the morning of July 22.
Both events will be hosted by Premier Brown and the two-day guest list includes club members, local leaders in politics and business, as well as local and overseas tourism industry partners.
"Now that all 18 holes are open at Port Royal, the rave reviews are rolling in," said Premier Brown who is an avid golfer. "I think the time is right to let golfers know - here in Bermuda and overseas - that a completely renovated Port Royal is open for business and ready to take its claim as one of the world's finest public golf courses."
A $14 million reconstruction of Port Royal included re-routing two holes, construction of new bunkers, the installation of a reverse osmosis plant, a computerized irrigation system and the planting of Tif Eagle on redesigned greens.
Casuarina tress have been replaced by indigenous Bermuda Cedar trees opening up vistas to the sea throughout the course which has been lengthened to 6,842 yards, making it the longest golf course in Bermuda.
The grand opening of Port Royal will take place when Port Royal hosts the 27th PGA Grand Slam of Golf on October 19 to 21. The event will be televised to an audience in 100 countries.
Dr. Brown said that although Port Royal continues to serve local golfers, it is also seen as a valuable tool for attracting visitors. Toward that end, the Department of Tourism has partnered with WFAN-AM radio and former NFL player Boomer Esiason to help get the word out to potential visitors about Port Royal.
Esiason will participate in the two-day official opening event at Port Royal and share his experiences on the highly-rated Boomer and Carton morning show on WFAN-AM. WFAN, which is owned and operated by CBS Radio, is based in New York and is the top sports radio station in America, reaching more than 1.7 million sports fans per week. The Boomer and Carton programme is broadcast weekdays from 6-10am on-air and online at www.wfan.com.
Billy Griffith
Director of Tourism William Griffith said: "Boomer Esiason is a big name with a big audience and we look forward to hosting him later this month at Port Royal. We have a great golf course to show off to the world and Boomer will help us get the message out to sports fans."
Additionally, WFAN will promote Bermuda as a vacation destination before, after and during Mr. Esiason's visit.
The quarterback turned broadcaster has also created an original blog called "Boom-uda Shorts" for text and video posts from Bermuda. Mr. Esiason will also use his Facebook page for Bermuda-relevant updates.
Meantime a host of golf writers is expected to attend the official opening events on July 21 and 22. Premier Brown said: "Bermuda now has five great golf courses including the new Port Royal, Mid Ocean and Tucker's Point and is now arguably the finest island golf destination in the world."[[In-content Ad]]
