Bermuda's top cricketers will be vying for a place in an elite Caribbean team to compete in a 'world series' against one of the top Test playing nations, when they line up for a $1 million 20/20 knockout tournament.

Texan billionaire Allen Stanford made the announcement during a flying visit to the island yesterday to promote his Stanford 20/20 tournament, which will take place in Antigua this summer.

As well as competing against 18 other islands for the million-dollar jackpot, the cricketers will be putting themselves in the window for the Stanford Super Team which will compete against either Australia, England or India for $5 million early next year.

Stanford, who has lived in Antigua for the past 20 years, said he hoped to attract up to a billion television viewers for the series - which will feature two games over the shortened 20-over format.

He said it was the next step from his summer tournament and a big part of his plans to revitalise the game in the region.

Stanford who has enlisted the support of 14 West Indian cricket legends to act as ambassadors for his tournament, said: “Let's put some money on the table and see if we can get a 20-20 super team and get a world series going for a $5 million jackpot.

“We will pick the best players from the tournament (this summer's Stanford 20/20) and form the Stanford Super Team and invite one of the best nations in the world to come to Antigua in January or February to play for $5 million a match.”[[In-content Ad]]
