Bermuda’s top batsman? It’s Ryan Steede

Island’s cricket universe upside down as Tucker is one of the top two bowlers

Stats aren’t everything in cricket but a quick glance at the breakdown for Bermuda's tour of the UAE shows why they failed so badly.

Of course, the headline statistic is the 5-0 reverse they suffered at the hands of a rejuvenated Arab side.

But winning wasn't everything on this tour. Bermuda were venturing into unfamiliar territory after a long lay-off to play against a team that was mid-way through their season.

The conditions were tough, they were playing with an unfamiliar ball and attempting to mesh together a mix of new faces and senior stalwarts.

So, in that context, defeat would not have been a disaster in itself. It will be the performances of key players and the margin of the losses that will worry Gus Logie the most.

The coach said before the tour he was not necessarily concerned with whether his side emerged victorious or not. He was looking for improvements from individuals and signs of development from his team.

Unfortunately he didn't get that.

When a front-line seam bowler (Ryan Steede) has the top batting average on the tour and your top batsman (Janeiro Tucker) has the second best bowling stats, something has clearly gone awry.

Here's our at a glance breakdown of how the Bermuda team performed on the recent tour.

Stephen Outerbridge

Innings: 5

Top Score: 40

Lowest Score: 4

Total Runs: 74

Average: 14.8

Notes: Started the tour badly but hit a degree of form towards the middle - contributing to Bermuda's first century partnership at the top of the order in recent memory.

Has a lot left to do to prove he is the answer to Bermuda's opening problems but in the context of a miserable tour for all concerned, he did enough to warrant another chance.

Lionel Cann

Innings: 5

Top Score: 14

Lowest Score: 0

Total Runs: 27

Average: 5.4

Notes: Cann, one of Bermuda's most explosive batsmen, was woefully short of form on this tour as his stats testify.

He was pushed up the order as a pinch-hitter in the latter fixtures but with no effect. He bowled just a handful of overs on the tour and took one wicket.

The Southampton all-rounder is way too talented for this kind of form to continue and it will be interesting to see if Logie experiments with him as an opener again.

Dean Minors

Innings: 5

Top score: 35

Lowest Score: 0

Total Runs: 88

Average: 17.6

Notes: Another batsman who was tried out in the opening spot, Minors did better than most.

His tour average of 17.6 is okay, by comparison to some of his team-mates and he did well enough at the top of the order to suggest he could fill in, in that role again.

Irving Romaine

Innings: 5

Top Score: 30

Lowest Score: 3

Total runs: 66

Average: 13.2

Notes: Promoted to vice-captain for this tour in the hope that it would help him make that extra step in improving his sense of responsibility to the team.

He admitted before the tour he needed to work on his concentration but, like much of Bermuda's top order, patience was a virtue in short supply for Romaine on this tour. He knows what he needs to work on.

Saleem Mukuddem

Innings: 3

Top Score: 49

Lowest Score: 2

Total Runs: 55

Average: 18.3

Notes: After successive failures in the opening two games Mukuddem managed to dig in and show the battling qualities, patience and concentration required to grind out a series top score of 49. With so many of the batsmen short of form, those were attributes that coach Gus Logie would have liked to see more of. Injury curtailed Mukuddem's tour after the third game.

Jekon Edness

Innings: 4

Top Score: 15

Lowest Score: 0

Total Runs: 30

Average: 7.5

Notes: Didn’t get a decent score on the tour but impressed enough with his technique and patience at the wicket to suggest he is capable of more. Was singled out by coach Gus Logie for his much-improved glovework behind the stumps.

Hasan Durham

Innings: 3

Top Score: 39

Lowest Score: 1

Total Runs: 46

Average: 15.3

Notes: Added some stability with his late order batting, particularly in Sunday’s match where he was top scorer.

Ryan Steede

Innings: 4

Top Score: 30

Lowest Score: 5

Total Runs: 65

Average: 21.7

Notes: Obviously selected for his bowling but proved to be Bermuda's best batsman. Scored vital runs to prevent low totals becoming even more embarrassing, prompting talk that he could develop into an all-rounder.

Janeiro Tucker

Innings: 5

Top Score: 34

Lowest Score: 6

Total Runs: 90

Average: 18

Notes: Tucker scored the most runs on the tour but still would have expected to do much better.

He didn’t become a bad player over night and like many of his fellow flops in the top-order can point to a long off-season and unfamiliar conditions as mitigation.[[In-content Ad]]
