Bermuda secures PGA Grand Slam of Golf through 2014

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER: The world’s best golfers will return to Bermuda after Port Royal was confirmed as the venue for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for the next two years.
 


The 2013 event will be held at the Southampton course on October 15-16, while the dates for the 2014 tournament are yet to be announced.
 


Other venues were thought to be in the frame, with San Diego confirmed as having had negotiations and Hawai’i rumoured to want the showpiece event back.



But after six successful years in Bermuda, the PGA said they wanted to continue the partnership, with the stunning Port Royal once again the stage for the competition, which features the season’s four Major championship winners.
 


Wayne Furbert, Minister of Business Development and Tourism, said in a press release: “This is great news for Bermuda to have the PGA Grand Slam return for the next two years. 


“During the past six years of hosting this event the beauty of Bermuda has been seen in countless millions of households across the world. I feel this is a great investment in our tourism product and attracts visitors to our shores to enjoy picture perfect rounds of golf at our world class courses.” 
 


The 36-hole event was won this year by three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington, a late call-up for the injured Open champion Ernie Els. Next year’s event will once again be broadcast by TNT to 85 countries and territories and an audience of more than 400 million households.
 


PGA of America president Ted Bishop said: “The PGA of America is honoured to continue the PGA Grand Slam of Golf tradition on the island of Bermuda through 2014 at the Port Royal Golf Course. 
 


“Bermuda has embraced the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, serving as an exemplary host the past six years and delivering unmatched hospitality and community support for the game’s elite foursome. 
 


“We are excited to once again join the Bermuda Department of Tourism in showcasing Bermuda as a premier golf and tourism destination by presenting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf to the world.”
 


According to the Government,  PGA & TNT spend just over $1M whilst on island with approximately 60 Bermuda service providers. The combined value of media impressions for Bermuda, Port Royal and the Southampton Fairmont is just under $40M. 
 


The lucrative Grand Slam of Golf features a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000; and fourth place $200,000. Past Grand Slam of Golf champions include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Els and Greg Norman.
