Bermuda batsmen falter against St. Vincent

Lionel Cann admitted Bermuda's batsmen had 'let the team down' as they were convincingly beaten by a strong St. Vincent side yesterday.

Cann, who was out for a first ball duck, said there had been too many rash shots as Gus Logie's men went down by six wickets.

David Hemp (44) was the top scorer for the visitors who scratched out 173 all out in 46.3 overs before St. Vincent skipper Lyndon James ushered his side to victory with an assured 55 not out.

James, one of the Stanford Superstars and a Windward Islands stalwart, brought up the victory with two sixes off seamer George O'Brien in the 45th over.

Earlier fiery O'Brien had smashed the helmet of St Vincent's Hyron Shallow with a bouncer that caused the batsman to retire hurt.

But it was not to be his day. The fast bowler, who has enjoyed a successful tour so far, finished with figures of 0 for 69.

Dwayne Leverock (2 for 7 off seven overs) and Kyle Hodsoll (2 for 19 from 5) had put the brakes on St Vincent's victory charge.

But the bottom line for Cann was that Bermuda did not put enough runs on the board.

"They were a very good side but too many of us gave our wickets away.

"We batted first on a damp wicket and we didn't play sensibly enough. Throughout the whole tour the batsmen have been failing and the bowlers have been winning games for us.

"You can't keep scoring 160, 170 and expect to win matches. Nobody has scored a century yet and we've only had a couple of fifties. We need those big scores to win matches.

"I've had a couple of decent scores but I've been disappointed myself that I haven't been able to turn sixties and seventies into centuries."

Chris Douglas (38), Fiqre Crockwell (17) and Stephen Outerbridge (17) all contributed yesterday but seamer Kenroy Martin (six for 17) curtailed their progress.

"He bowled well but there were too many big shots at the wrong times," said Cann.

Bermuda, who had enjoyed successful stays in Trinidad and St Lucia, touched down in St. Vincent boasting a 4-1 winning record on their Caribbean tour.

And they now have an immediate chance to bounce back against St. Vincent's Under-23 squad today. They play one more game in St. Vincent on Friday before heading to Grenada for the final leg of the tour on Sunday.
