Facebook can be one of the greatest time wasters ever invented.

If someone added the amount of hours people play Farmville or Mobsters, the total would be staggering.

But you can put Facebook to good use and save yourself some travel dollars.

On Wednesday, WestJet offered a promo code for 15 per cent off Vancouver flights, but it was only available for its Facebook friends or Twitter followers.

Unfortunately, it was a one-day only deal, but it shows the importance of adding the various airlines and hotels, so you can take advantage of these deals as they happen.

WestJet also has a promo code tab on its Facebook page.

Just click on it to see what special deals the airline has.

More Facebook

Delta Airlines is offering travellers free Wi-Fi on its flights during February if you want to use Facebook.

On American Airlines’ Facebook page you can check to see if your flight has Wi-Fi.

Bermuda, Bahama

The Beach Boys knew the difference between the various Caribbean islands when they sang the classic hit Kokomo.

It’s something WestJet could learn.

On the cover of its December flight magazine (pictured) it highlighted the Bahamas famous ‘Old rattle and shake’ train.

But when travellers went to the article, it wasn’t about the Bahamas at all but about Bermuda’s old Railway Trail.

Ooops.

More free AA miles

Some of you told me you took advantage of the Bose offer last month and earned 150 American Airlines miles just sitting at your desks.

Here’s a chance to up the ante and get 250 free AA miles.

All you have to do is sign up for Best Western Rewards between February 6 and April 11.

You’ll have to set your airline preference to AA and you must wait until Sunday.

I signed up on Wednesday, so no miles for me.

You can also earn extra AAdvantage miles for staying at Best Western between February 6 and April 11.

Earn 500 AAdvantage bonus miles on your first stay, 750 on your second, and 1,000 for each stay thereafter.

You would normally get 250 miles per stay so you can at least double it.

Keep staying and keep earning: There is no limit on the number of bonus miles that can be earned during the promotion period.

Body scanners in Vegas

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is testing out new body scanners that are less intrusive than the ones at 78 airports.

The new scanners rely on software that produces a sort of chalk outline of your figure when you pass through it.

If there’s no funny business going on the person will get a big green ‘okay’, if not, an ‘x’ will appear in the area of what it suspects to be a hidden object.

The person will then get a pat down search to investigate further.

It’s being tested at three airports, including Las Vegas’ McCarron International Airport and at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
